Fortune Unveils 2025’s Most Powerful Women in Business

Celebrating female executives leading transformative change in the corporate world, Fortune has unveiled its latest list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Business. This annual compilation highlights women who are not only managing successful companies but also pioneering new paths in diverse industries.

Female leaders from around the globe are being recognized for their strategic vision, resilience, and innovative approaches. With 52 leaders based in the United States and 48 representing 19 other countries, the list reflects a growing international influence among women in business leadership roles.

Leading Figures in Automotive and Finance

Mary Barra, the Chair and CEO of General Motors, has once again secured the top spot, marking her continued prominence in the automotive industry. Barra's leadership has been pivotal in GM's transition toward electric vehicles, aiming for a complete shift by 2035. She has skillfully steered the company through industry challenges, solidifying her status as a formidable leader.

Following Barra are Julie Sweet of Accenture and Jane Fraser of Citigroup. Sweet has been instrumental in transforming Accenture into a leader in digital innovation, while Fraser, the first female CEO of a major Wall Street bank, is guiding Citigroup through significant structural changes and promoting digital and inclusive finance initiatives.

Criteria Reflecting Modern Leadership

Fortune’s selection process for these influential leaders focuses on six primary criteria: business success, career trajectory, influence, innovation, and improvements in business practices and culture. These parameters highlight the multifaceted aspects of leadership beyond financial metrics, acknowledging a more holistic approach to corporate governance.

Even with over 50 women leading Fortune 500 companies, only 20 secured a place on this list, demonstrating the competitive nature of modern corporate leadership and the growing bar for recognition.

New Entrants and Global Representation

This edition of the list introduces several new influential figures. Among them is Tan Su Shan of Singapore's DBS Bank, celebrated for her innovative initiatives in digital banking and green finance. Under her guidance, DBS has set a new standard for sustainability in Asia.

Returning to the list is Deirdre O’Brien from Apple, recognized for her contributions to expanding the company's retail footprint and evolving workplace strategies. Leaders from various countries, including France, Brazil, the UAE, and South Korea, also highlight the expanding global reach of female leadership.

Driving Change Across Industries

The women featured are not just managing profitable enterprises but are also at the forefront of integrating ESG principles, advancing AI technologies, and fostering inclusive business environments. They are setting new benchmarks and redefining what it means to lead in the modern business landscape.

The combined influence of these leaders is establishing new standards for success, showing that effective leadership today requires a blend of profitability, purpose, and adaptability to global shifts.

These remarkable women are reshaping businesses not just with their strategic acumen, but also by championing innovation, diversity, and sustainable practices, heralding a new era of corporate leadership.
