Dr. LaVerne Collins: Empowering Women Through Resilient Leadership
Dr. LaVerne Collins leverages her experiences to inspire women, emphasizing cultural awareness and authentic resilience in leadership.

In the realm of mental wellness and leadership, Dr. LaVerne Collins has carved a distinctive niche. Through her roles as a counselor, entrepreneur, and speaker, she transforms personal narratives into empowering blueprints for women seeking authentic leadership grounded in cultural awareness and resilience.
Collins’s life and career reflect a deep commitment to mental wellness and multicultural education. Her inspiring journey from a small town near Pittsburgh to founding New Seasons Counseling, Training & Consulting, LLC, illustrates how personal adversity can be reshaped into a legacy of empowerment and transformation.
A Journey Shaped by Early Experiences
Growing up in a predominantly White neighborhood outside Pittsburgh, Collins encountered cultural isolation early on. These experiences of being the only Black child in her surroundings laid the groundwork for her future passion for cultural integration and mental wellness.
A significant childhood memory involves her mother's explanation about a set of towels embroidered with a White girl's face, revealing societal limitations in representation. This realization was pivotal in shaping Collins's understanding of cultural invisibility and igniting her lifelong mission to advocate for visibility and inclusion.
The Power of Belonging and Cultural Identity
At Syracuse University, Collins found camaraderie among a diverse group of Black students, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural pride. This environment encouraged her to delve into studies of race, culture, and identity, despite her initial focus outside psychology.
Her counseling career revealed gaps in existing mental health practices for People of Color, echoing her mother's words: “They don’t make things like that for us.” This insight drove her to seek culturally relevant counseling practices, which later defined her professional endeavors.
Building New Seasons and Transforming Counseling
With the understanding that feeling seen is powerful, Collins launched New Seasons Counseling, Training & Consulting, LLC. She designed a practice that integrates cultural elements, such as music and community involvement, to make clients from diverse backgrounds feel acknowledged and supported.
Her innovative approach has redefined continuing education for counselors, emphasizing cultural competence and the integration of race and history into therapy. This three-tiered model of client care, counselor development, and trainer empowerment aims to extend her impact far beyond individual sessions.
Influencing Through Authentic Storytelling
As a keynote speaker, Collins captivates audiences by weaving personal stories with universal themes of identity and resilience. Her presentations go beyond strategies, offering insights into decolonizing therapy and centering cultural intelligence in mental health practices.
Following personal tragedy with the loss of her son, Collins published “Overlooked: Counselor Insights for the Unspoken Issues in Black American Life.” This work addresses the nuances of Black mental health, bringing overlooked cultural aspects to light for practitioners nationwide.
Dr. Collins's trajectory is one marked by tenacity and the pursuit of inclusivity in mental wellness. Her accolades, including being named a top influential leader in mental health, underscore her significant contributions to the field.
Looking forward, Collins is determined to broaden her influence into corporate and community settings, promoting multicultural understanding as a valuable asset. Her legacy, she envisions, is one that empowers others to continue her work, ensuring that no one remains unseen.
